Work programme

The new WP 2018 has been published on 2 August 2017. For the 2017 and 2016 calls, please refer to the WP 2017 and WP 2016 respectively. A short overview can be found hereunder.

Main novelties of the WP 2018

In addition to the 3 main ERC research grants (Starting, Consolidator and Advanced), a Synergy Grant call for groups of two to four Principal Investigators to jointly address ambitious research problems will be reintroduced under Work Programme 2018 (based on previous experience from 2012 and 2013).

What is ERC

The European Research Council (ERC) provides attractive, long-term funding to enable individual researchers and their teams to pursue ground-breaking, high gain/high risk research, on the basis of Union-wide competition.

Proposals are evaluated on the sole criterion of excellence: evaluations are conducted by peer review panels composed of scientists and scholars selected by the ERC. They may be assisted by remote referees

ERC follows a bottom-up approach: proposals from all fields of science are eligible. The ERC encourages proposals of an interdisciplinary nature which cross the boundaries between different fields of research, pioneering proposals addressing new and emerging fields of research or proposals introducing unconventional, innovative approaches and scientific inventions

Researchers of any age, any career stage and any nationality can apply: The ERC awards funding to excellent investigators looking to set up or consolidate their own independent research team or programme, as well as already established research leaders. ERC grants are open to researchers of any nationality as long as the host institution is established in a EU Member State or Associated Country

ERC grants

The ERC funding is streamlined into 3 main type of grants adressing researchers at different stage of their careers. A fourth grant, the ERC Proof of Concept is available for PI of ERC projects to verify the innovation potential of ideas arising from their ERC funded projects.

ERC Grants
Career stage
Funding
ERC Starting Grants (ERC StG) 2 to 7 years after PhD up to 1,5 million € for 5 years
ERC Consolidator Grants (ERC CoG) more than 7 to 12 years after PhD up to 2 milion € for 5 years
ERC Advanced Grants (ERC AdG) more than 12 years after PhD up to 2 ,5 milion € for 5 years
ERC Proof of Concept (ERC PoC) for PI of ERC projects up to 150 000 € for 18 months

The financial contribution will take the form of the reimbursement of up to 100% of the total eligible and approved direct costs and of flat-rate financing of indirect costs on the basis of 25% of the total eligible direct costs. The final amount to be paid must be justified on the basis of the real costs incurred by the project, the awarded grant representing a maximum funding.
