Work programme

The official WP2018-2020 is avaible. A short overview can be found hereunder

Research infrastructures (RI) are facilities, resources and services that are used by the research communities to conduct research and foster innovation in their fields. They include: major scientific equipment (or sets of instruments); knowledge-based resources such as collections, archives or scientific data; e-infrastructures, such as data and computing systems and communication networks; and any other infrastructure of a unique nature essential to achieve excellence in research and innovation. Such infrastructures may be single-sited, virtual or distributed.

The aim of this programme is to:

  • ensure the implementation, long-term sustainability and efficient operation of the research infrastructures identified by the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) and other world-class research infrastructures;
  • to support the development of new world class research infrastructures and
  • to open up key national and regional existing research infrastrcutures to European researchers from academia and industry and ensuring their optimal use and joint development (integrating activities).

Themes of the programme

The 3 year work programme 2018-2020 is implemented through 6 calls for proposals. Only the topics for the calls 2018 and 2019 are fully defined. For 2020 only the title and an indicative budget are indicated.

Call 1 - Development and long-term sustainability of new world-class research infrastructures (INFRADEV):

Through this call support is given to:

  • design studies to identify the next generation of new research infrastructures (conceptual and technical design)
  • the preparatory phase of ESFRI projects through a targeted approach
  • the individual support to ESFRI and other world-class RI
  • European Open Science cloud for Research

Call 2 - Implementing the European Open Science Cloud (INFRAEOSC):

  • Access to commercial services through the EOSChub
  • Prototyping new innovative services
  • Connecting ESFRI Infrastructures through cluster projects
  • Support to the EOSC governance
  • Enhancing the EOSC portal and connecting thematic clouds

Call 3 - Integrating and opening research infrastructures of pan-European interest (INFRAIA):

This call focuses on opening up key national and regional research infrastructures to all European researchers from both academia and industry and ensuring their optimal use and joint development. Under this work programme, the integrating activities adress two classes of communities:

  • the starting communities, whose RIs show a limited degree of coordination and networking. The focus is on standardisation, networking and establishing procedures for a common access as a basis for trans-national and virtual access provision
  • advanced communities, typically communities having already benefited from integrating activities in the past. the focus here will be more on innovation and widening trans-national and virtual access provision.

The call for the advanced communities is a single-stage call and follows a top-down, targeted approach. The targeted topics are listed in the WP.

The call for starting communities is a 2 stage call following a bottom-up approach, covering all areas of science and technology. Proposals should however not restrict their services to too narrow research fields and address the wider scientific community.

Call 4 - European Data Infrastructure (INFRAEDI))

  • Pan-european High Performance Computing infrastrcuture and services (PRACE)
  • HPC PPP: Centres of Excellence on HPC
  • Support to the governance of the HPC infrastructures

Call 5 - Demonstrating the role of Research Infrastructures in the translation of Open Science into Open Innovation (INFRAINNOV)

This call will foster the innovation potential of research infrastructures by increasing the involvement of industry (including SMEs) in the development of research infrastructures, and making industry more aware of the opportunities offered by research infrastructure to improve their products, e.g. as experimental test facilities, innovation hubs, knowledge-based centres.

Call 6 - Support to policy and international cooperaation (INFRASUPP)

The goal of this call is to support international cooperation throught the exchange of best practices for national roadmap drafting and evaluation procedures, to conduct an international landscaping exercise, to support bilateraal cooperation with Africa,...
